RIO DE JANEIRO (NBB) - Celebrations are underway in Rio de Janeiro again where for the second time in the past few months, Flamengo have won a major honor.
After prevailing in the FIBA Americas League for the first time, the Brazilian giants captured their domestic title over the weekend with a 78-73 victory over Paulistano at the Barra Arena.
Marcelo Machado, the 39-year-old retired national team star of Brazil who some think will return to the side for the FIBA Basketball World Cup, had 16 points in the victory.
"That was a tough game," he said.
"We were playing against a very good team, and while we open a certain advantage in some moments, we knew they'd react as they are resilient.
"In the end, tranquility prevailed.
"It's not easy playing in front of that crowd and I think they felt it a little bit. Our team is deserving since we maintained our poise."
Marquinhos, who is set for a return to the Brazil national side after missing last year's FIBA Americas Championship, had 12 points for Flamengo.
Nicolas Laprovittola, one of the guards fighting for a spot in Argentina's squad for the FIBA Basketball World Cup, had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Jerome Meyinsse, the team's American center, was named the MVP of the final.
He had 16 points and four rebounds.
"Winning this (MVP) award means a lot to me," Meyinsse said.
"My father passed away at the beginning of the championship, so I dedicate this award to him.
"I also dedicate it to my mother. Both always gave me strength, always helped me to keep playing and dedicating myself. This award is for them."
