RIO DE JANEIRO (Panamerican Games) - Alex Garcia has withdrawn from the Brazil squad before the start of their Panamerican Games campaign because of injury.
The point guard broke his left hand during training and is set to be out of action for four to six weeks.
"He suffered a fracture in the fourth left metacarpus and will have an operation on Wednesday in Barra D'or Hospitan in Rio," Brazil doctor Carlos Vicente Andreoli said.
"He must then begin treatment that will keep him off the court from four to six weeks."
It is the second injury blow in the past week for coach Lula Ferreira, who also lost Rafael Hettsheimeir to a sprained ankle.
"We are very sorry for Alex's injury," said Ferreira.
"He is a very important player for us. Now, the team have to overcome this loss and work harder to replace him by dividing Alex's workload in games."
No replacement will be called up for Garcia, while Paulao Prestes was drafted in to compensate for the loss of Hettsheimeir.
