BARUERI (2010 FIBA World Championship for Women) – New Brazil coach Carlos Colinas will gather with his players on Wednesday as the fourth ranked team in the world begins its preparations for the South American Championship.
Two of the players in the 18-strong preliminary squad, Damiri Amaral and Tássia Carcavallo, are joining the team fresh off a silver-medal winning performance at the U18 FIBA Americas Championship over the weekend.
That result sealed a spot for the country at next year’s FIBA U19 World Championship in Chile.
The South American Championship will be staged from August 8-14, while the team will compete at the FIBA World Championship for Women from September 23 to October 3.
In Brno, Brazil will take on Spain, Korea and Mali in Preliminary Round Group C.
On the first couple of days this week, Brazil’s players will have medical examinations and physical tests.
The team’s workouts will start on Friday.
Veterans Erika de Souza and Iziane Marques will not join the team until after their WNBA season has finished with the Atlanta Dream.
Brazil preliminary squad: Alessandra Oliveira, Érika Souza, Nádia Colhado, Damiris Amaral, Kelly Santos, Jucimara Dantas (Mamá), Franciele Nascimento, Fernanda Beling, Sílvia Gustavo, Iziane Marques, Micaela Jacintho, Karen Gustavo, Helen Luz, Tássia Carcavalli, Cristina Carvalho, Palmira Marçal, Adrianinha Pinto and Natália Burian.
