For those who might not have known Boumtje Boumtje coming into the FIBA U17 World Cup, they certainly know who he is now.

He is one of the leading candidates for the Most Valuable Player award as he has averaged 19.5 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks heading into the Final - all of that production in 21.6 minutes per game.

His best performance came in the Quarter-Finals against Puerto Rico where he collected 31 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks for an efficiency of 49 - the fourth highest mark in tournament history.

Boumtje Boumtje has the size of a center at 211 cm / 6’11" plus a wide strong frame, but he can also dribble the ball with great vision and passing skills, and he can shoot like guard from the outside.

The thing the star talent believes makes him stand out is just his all-around skill set.

"I don't think I can be put into a box," Boumtje Boumtje said. "I'm really versatile. I can shoot the ball, I can dribble the ball, I can pass the ball. Whatever you need me to do, I can do it. I am just showing the plethora of skills that I can contribute."

Boumtje Boumtje has spent the last three seasons playing at Spanish powerhouse Barcelona. He helped the Catalan club reach the final of the Spanish U16 domestic championship game in 2025, only to lose to Real Madrid despite picking up 18 points and 11 rebounds in the game.

Boumtje Boumtje then collected 19 points and 7 rebounds in this year’s Spanish U18 league championship game, but Barcelona lost again to Real Madrid.

Barcelona lost another big game to Real this season, falling in the final of the newly-founded U22 league as Boumtje Boumtje was limited to just 4 points and 5 rebounds. All told, he averaged 15.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals in the U22 competition.

Boumtje Boumtje and Barcelona did get their revenge on Real Madrid in the final of a major European U18 club competition, winning the title by beating their rivals and Boumtje Boumtje was named Most Valuable Player.

USA head coach Scott Fitch has been thoroughly impressed with Boumtje Boumtje.

"I think he's exceeded expectations. When he came in, I had watched a lot of film on him at Barcelona and saw that he played the four though he played on the perimeter a lot. And to me if he can play inside and outside he becomes a special player. And I feel like he's embraced that, so for me the fact that he's been coachable and wanted to learn and then applied it to me he's exceeded expectations.”

Coach Scott Fitch has been impressed with his star big man

On top of everything that Boumtje Boumtje does skills-wise on the court, he is also like a coach as well. In fact, by playing for so long in Europe, the big man is actually the most experienced individual of anyone on the USA team in terms of FIBA play - players or coaches.

"We've never had that situation where a kid came in and he's an expert on FIBA rules. So as a coach I've leaned on him for different things, different rules and different ways to make sure we're playing the FIBA game the right way. It's been great as a coach. I feel like he's almost like an assistant coach in some ways,” Fitch said.

The other players on the team feel the same way.

A world title would give Black bragging rights over NBA brother

“He's just cool. You learn from him because he plays overseas. He plays more than us. He tells us the rules, that people are more physical than in the US,” CJ Rosser said of his front court mate.

"He's really good. He’s 7-foot, can shoot the ball like a point guard. He's really good and he’s gotten adjusted to the style we play," said AJ Williams. "He’s really good with the rules. When we look at film, we rely on him to tell all the stuff we probably don't know as players."

Boumtje Boumtje himself doesn't just know the game from being in Europe. He grew up with the game in his blood. His father is Ruben Boumtje Boumtje, who played three years in the NBA for the Portland Trail Blazers as well as six seasons in Europe from 2005 to 2011. He also played for his native Cameroon at the 2008 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament and the FIBA AfroBasket 2009.

Joaquim was was born in St. Petersburg, Florida and the family moved to Barcelona three years ago. His father took a job with the Basketball African League in Senegal as the BAL’s head of operations, and the family thought Joaquim and his mother, younger brother and two younger sisters would be best set in Barcelona.

When asked about what his father told him ahead of this tournament, Boumtje Boumtje said: "Just play my game. Don't back down, don't shrink my role. Just play how I normally play and just try and play my best like I always do."

USA Basketball knew of Boumtje Boumtje for some time and brought him into its training camp last summer ahead of the FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2025. The big man became the first player based overseas to be invited to Team USA's youth national selection camp.

One thing that might be overlooked with Boumtje Boumtje is him having to adapt his game to how USA play.

"When he came to us, I felt like he had to learn how we play. And so for him to morph his game and be able to be as efficient as he's been in three weeks is really incredible. I think it speaks to how good he really is," Fitch said.

And the big man has really taken some major steps forward too.

"His energy on defense has gone through the roof. He's playing with force right now where I think before he kind of settled for threes a lot. Now I feel like he's he's mixing that with force and if he does that, man, the sky's the limit for him."

Boumtje Boumtje’s next step after the FIBA U17 World Cup is to head to Durham, North Carolina where he will join the esteemed Duke University for his freshman college season in the fall. And he is already being listed as a top-two pick in the 2028 NBA Draft according to at least one mock draft.

Boumtje Boumtje would love to board the plane out of Istanbul on Monday with a gold medal in his luggage.

"I think that would be amazing. I think it's very foreseeable, a very real thing for us. I think it's our tournament to lose. It's just going to depend on how we play as a team and how we push together."

And how much Boumtje Boumtje’s knowledge of the game and incredibly versatile skillset can lead USA.
