Bosnia and Herzegovina favorite Miralem Halilovic announced his international retirement on Instagram

The forward represented his nation for almost two decades.

SARAJEVO (Bosnia and Herzegovina) - Miralem Halilovic has announced his retirement from international duty after a long service of representing Bosnia and Herzegovina's national team.

A key component of the Dragons' teams at youth and senior level, Halilovic took to social media to announce his international retirement after being unable to compete at FIBA EuroBasket 2025 in the summer due to injury.

However, not to be deterred, the 34-year-old still traveled with the team and witnessed his nation finish an impressive 13th in a highly competitive tournament.

"Every time I would wear the jersey of Bosnia and Herzegovina with great pride and obligation, I sought to be an example, on and off the [court]," Halilovic wrote on his Instagram page.

"Next big contest is [FIBA Basketball World Cup] 2027, and I think it's time for some new players to take on important roles. This team has what it takes to make the next move."

From starting his international career at the U16 level in 2007, Halilovic has been a consistent figure for his country, known for his highly effective style of play.

Halilovic averaged 8.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in the final window of the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers, which would be his final official games for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Before that, Halilovic averaged 10.8 points and 6.2 rebounds at FIBA EuroBasket 2022, with a tournament high of 16 points and 9 rebounds against Hungary in the Group Phase.

He also averaged a best of 14.4 points per game during the Qualifiers campaign for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 as they narrowly missed out on making it to the main event.

"First, I would like to thank my family, the greatest support throughout the years. Thank you for believing in me, making the sacrifice and giving [me] the wind in my back," he added.

"Thanks to my teammates for all the shared moments and the atmosphere that we have built and kept for years. We were like one big family, which was our driving force and foundation of everything.

"I would like to thank all the selectors, the late Sabit Hadzic, who sent me my first call to the national team, Vedran Bosnic, who gave me the honor of wearing the captain's ribbon and started this story, and to coach Adis Beciragic, with whom we achieved the greatest victories of this generation."
