WOMEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008
Team Characteristics
Team that plays within the team concept and maximizes individual player abilities. Perimeter play is
strong and dictates the flow of the game on offense and defense. Defensively, they can disrupt the
offense and cash in on turnovers with quick break baskets. Blend of inside and outside offensive
productivity. Defend well and rebound consistently. Cohesive unit with solid game plan each game.
Offensive Tendencies

Passing skills and ball movement characterize this offensive attack. Good mix of half court motion
and set plays. All players possess good ball skills and ability to create offense. Multiple screening
action keep ball moving and put defenders in constant decision making mode. The second and third
screening options result in baskets or fouls.
Transition

Scoring on the break is created in a multitide of ways. Quick scores off turnovers and long rebounds
provide lay ups frequently. Quick outlets aid the break as perimeter players drive ball down middle of
floor to commit defenders. Penetration leads to passes to open perimeter shooters. Early on ball
screens are set at times to force switches and penetration.
Set Plays
- Wing
entry, quick on ball screen and roll

- Shuffle
cut, double screen, on ball screen and roll

- On
ball screen, ball reversal, slip and lob

Line up three players across the lane and screening action leads to cuts in several directions. After
the ball is thrown in, passer receives a down screen under the basket for open shot. Another play
starts in a diamond. Back screen frees a player on the back side then screeners roll to basket.
Zone Offense

Spread the floor in a 4 out/1 in set. Post flashes into open areas and score. Post may also step out
on perimeter to shoot or to exchange with other post. Good player and ball movment characterize the
zone attack.
Team Defense

Aggressive 2-3 extended zone and 3-2 match up zone forces offense to pass and take quick shots
out of rhythm. Extend pressure from half court into the front court. Deny passing lanes and pressure
ball in both man to man and zone defenses. Will double to the ball at any time to force turnovers or
quick shots.
