WOMEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008
Team Characteristics
Very quick, scrappy team. Good overall team concept and role definition. Unselfish play generates
enough offense to win games. Combination of solid defense and efficient offense gives them a
chance to win consistently. Mix transition and half court offense well and have good shot selection
and distribution. Limited turnovers help them take advantage of each possession.
Offensive Tendencies

Spreading the floor is a concept that dominates their half court play. The open floor allows for dribble
enetration, inside/outside action, and penetrate and pitch situations. Use of on ball screening also
helps creat baskets. Penetration is a focus for perimeter players. Players present themselves in on
open areas when penetration occurs.
Transition

Transiton baskets come from long rebounds, double teaming the on ball screen, or denying the
passing lanes. All players are involved in the break. Posts will run floor for return passes from the
perimeter or spot up in the trailer position. Guard push ball to basket or pull up for mid range
jumpshot. May make several passes in transition to get the best shot possible. Will flow into half
court offens if transition shot is not available.
Set Plays
- Guard
to guard pass, flare screen, post isolation.

- Post
pop high to catch, quick weak side flex cut off post

- Wing
entry, ball reversal, back screen lob

Post and perimeter play stack in the lane on ball side. Screening action gives passer two options for
shot or slip to the basket. Two remaining players are spaced out wide on weak side. At times, a third
player will join the stack to create additional screening and scoring options.
Zone Offense

Zone offense is a 3 out/2 in set with constant ball and player movement. Posts work hard to flash
and catch the ball in vulnerable areas of the zone. Inside out action leads to open jump shots.
Team Defense

Half court defense is based on extreme ball pressure and good weak side support. Pressure on the
ball leads to turnovers but can yield penetration into the lane also. Double down on post and may
double the on ball screens. Block out well and rebound consistently. Keep defense primarily in the
half court and apply their defensive principles well.
