    AUSTRALIA
    WOMEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008

    Team Characteristics
Hard playing, efficient team. Excellent ball skills allow them to drive, get fouled, and create open
shots. Use of capable post players opens the floor for open threes and penetration. Team oriented
approach to offense and defense. Consistent help and recover along with solid rebounding make
their defense very good. Create difficult match ups for opponent due to player ball skills and scoring
    ability.

    Offensive Tendencies
Cohesive, well coached offensive unit. All players pass, cut, catch and score from all spots on the
floor. Guards push the ball in transition and strike before the defense is set. Unselfish play creates
good shots by making the extra pass or passes needed. Players away from ball slide into uncovered
areas to catch and shoot. Isolation for post players is common and an emphasis is put on getting the
ball inside. Posts can score inside and outside and possess good passing skills.

    Transition
A big piece of their scoring comes in transiton. Quick outlet passes ignite the break and give the
offense a numbers advantage. Run outs by the guards are common as are passes ahead to posts
running to the rim. 3 on 2 or 4 on 2 break is not uncommon. Ball is usually advanced up the floor on
the pass for an open shot or pass to open player down the middle of the lane.

    Set Plays
    1. Wing dribble out, ball reversal, small/big block to block back screen.
    2. Wing dribble out, up cut to top, immediate on ball screen and roll
    3. Double high set. Post pop and catch, fake hand off, hand off for shot
    Out of Bounds
Start in a 2-2 set with two players high and two on the blocks. Cross screen on the blocks gives
shooter opportunity to get open and post screener chance to screen and slip to the basket or look for
lob pass. Back side cutter to opposite corner is available for pass to the deep corner for three
    pointer.

    Zone Offense
3 out 2 in or 4 out are the common sets used agasint zones. A good zone offensive team because of
their ability to pass and shoot. Posts flash into open areas to score or pass to perimeter players
spotting up. Special plays are tun against zones that include on ball screening, cutting through the
lane, and reverse cutting action to open corners.

    Team Defense
Good half court man to man team with solid on ball and off ball discipline. Apply full court 2-2-1
trapping zone press with trap areas at the half court line, back court and front court. Will also pick up
with full court man pressure and force the ball to the sideline. Like to hard hedge or trap the on ball
screens and rotate to pick off pasas out of trap.
