    MEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008

    Team Characteristics

    Offensive Tendencies
Very skilled offensive team with good inside/outside balance. Constant screening action keep the
defense chasing cutters which opens up the middle. High/low action is a big part of the offensive
philosophy. Posts are active and good passers in the high and low post areas. Shooters use baseline
screens to create open shots on the wing. On ball screen and roll action is main part of offense.
Posts can roll, catch and score with efficiency.

    Transition
Lead by good perimete play, transition yields many baskets. Three guards run hard in transition
ahead of the defense for drives into the lane or passes to the perimeter. All perimeter players can
advance the ball up the floor and make good decisions. Good three point shooting of fthe break.
Posts run the floor and catch on the run to score.

    Set Plays
    1. Double high set, on ball screen, high/low passer
    2. Ball reversal, post exahange, back screen for lob pass.
    3. Post pop to high post, ball reversal, big/little cross screen.
    Out of Bounds
Effiecient out of bounds team. Run two or three options on each play. Score often agasint zones by
screening in the outside defenders, lobbing into the middle, or finding open flashes in the paint. Man
to man play is usually a staggered single screen for a shooter through the lane.

    Zone Offense
Two alignments are used. 4 out/1 in set stretches the defense to get ball inside to post player. When
defense collapses on post, ball comes back out to shooters. A 3 out/2 in set gives shooter more
room to operate and spot up.

    Team Defense
Good basket support gives perimeter players the ability to pressure the ball all over the floor. In the
half and full court, there is good ball pressure and trapping. Any dribble penetration is met by shot
blockers at the rim. Mix man to man with zones in the half court. Extended 2-3 and 1-3-1 zones are
effective by making the offense make multiple passes before finding a good shot. Trapping will occur
in the back court at any time.
