MEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008
Team Characteristics
Very skilled, experienced team. Rely on good team concept and solid post play. Guards scoring in
transition and fill their role on offense. Ball goes through the post players on most possessions.
Effective defenisve team due to pressure, trapping and ability to shot block. Work well as a unit and
make the opponent earn every thing they get. Good balance of inside and outside play on both ends.
Offensive Tendencies

Versatile players allow the offense many scoring options. Set plays get the ball to players in specific
spots on the floor where they can be successful. Isolation is common with an offensive possession.
On ball screens result in drives to the basket, step back jump shots and hitting the screener on the
roll. Good cutting action away from the ball on post feeds. Aggressive guard play gets the ball to the
paint often, creating more scoring situations.
Transition

Transition scoring is creates with quick outlets and hard driving guard play. Many baskets in
transition come from turnover caused by defensive pressure or blocked shots. Posts are good
shooter and trail the break for open three point shots. Once the ball is penetrated on the other end,
several players are shot ready in spot up positions for open shots. A quarter of their baskets come
off the break.
Set Plays
- Post
pop out, hand off to guard, slip to the basket.
- Shuffle
cut, screenign action on both sides for shooter.
- Perimeter
over the top cut, post exchange inside, high/low pass for lay up.

Two basic sets are used. One, a double stack on the ball side lane line is used to free up a shooter
to the ball side corner. Secondary action once the ball is in bounds, is an automatic on ball screen.
The 1-3 set features a cross screen in the post for a lay up opportunity.
Team Defense

Team defense is based on full court pressure, rotating man to man in the half court, and shot
blocking ability at the rim. Especially after made free throws, they will pick up full court. A man to man
defense includes the run and jump feature. A trapping zone press is also part of their defensive
system. At times in the half court, they will double the ball on the wing or at the point with a forward
and scramble to cover up on the front line.
