MEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008
Team Characteristics
Relentless approach to playing the game from baseline to baseline. They expend great effort to wear
down their opponent. Take the initiative on offense, driving hard to the basket and crashing the
boards. Their play defensively is also all out and aggressive. Play to their strengths by putting each
+player in positions to use talents and be successful. The combination of skilled players and
toughness make them a worthy opponent for any team.
Offensive Tendencies

Offensive priorities are dribble penetration, post step backs, and use of on ball screens. Will look to
get a quick shot if available. If not, ball reversal and dribble penetration provide many opportunities to
weaken the defense. Posts are active screeners and step back after screening for open perimeter
shots. Good passing team at all positions. Guards create a lot of shots off the dribble for themselves
or find teammates open on dribble penetration.
Transition

A relentless, hard driving team on the break. Transition points account for a good percentage of
team points. Good defense causes a lot of transition opportunities. Guards finish the break often by
going baseline to baseline for a score. Goal is to get the ball to the paint on the dribble or pass. All
players are capable of bringing the ball down the floor. Shooters do good job of spotting up for open
shots.
Set Plays
- Flex
action with curl cut.

- Flex

- Flare

Out of Bounds

They use a double stack, 2-2, or 4 flat alignment on out of bounds baseline plays. The goal is to free
a shooter on the ball side or in the weak side corner. Posts screen and roll back to the ball. Another
play will get the ball up top, followed immediately by and on ball screen and roll.
Zone Offense

Zone set is a 4 out set with a high post. High post can step out to make it a 5 out look, or on ball
screen up top for guards. Once ball is reversed, they posts can exchange from low to high, looking
for gaps against the zone. Perimeter players will also screen for each other then step into open gaps
for shots.
Team Defense

Creating chaos for the opponent is a main goal for this team defensive system. After made baskets
or free throws they will zone press, 1-2-1-1, with aggressive traps and rotation. Once across half
court, they will continue to trap and keep the ball moving ansd out of the hands of the main ball
handlers. Man to man defense is active and uses physical play with excellent weak side help. Many
turnovers come from help side defenders rotating to help and jarring the ball loose.
