MEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008
Team Characteristics
Steady, solid team based on playing roles on both ends of the floor. Guards initiate offensive action
and keep the ball moving. They embody the team concept on offense, all sharing in the scoring
production. They give a good defensive effort and rely on help from each other and a post presence.
Offensive Tendencies

Offense is based on balance and a post presence. Post set a lot of on ball screens and look to catch
on the roll to the basket. Use a lot of ball reversals, cutting through the lane, big/small screens and
penetration. Perimeter players spot up for return pass when ball is through into the post.
Transition

Transition basketball comes from excellent passing. Guards push the ball up the floor on the pass or
dribble. Cross court passes are used as well as penetration and pitch. Posts run the floor hard and
score off passes from the wing. On ball reversal, guards spot up and shoot the three.
Set Plays
Out of Bounds

Start with a tandem at the block on the ball side and two players up top. A cross screen at the block
frees a guard in the corner. The screener, a post, releases to the basket for a lob pass and finish. At
the same time a perimeter player on top cuts on the back side for a possible lay up.
Defensive Tendencies

A basic, sound man to man team that pushes their pressure into the full court to hurry the opponent
into their offense. Will gamble in the half court by double teaming or switching at times. Big post
defenders can block shots and make offense shoot more from the perimeter. Scrappy team with
quick hands and ability turn turnovers into easy baskets.
