GERMANY
MEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008
Team Characteristics
Very solid team based on good inside play. Offensively, the focus is on getting the ball inside on the
block or mid post area. Post touches create a lot of offensive action. All players are capable of
scoring and play unselfishly. Defensively the are position oriented and funnel the ball to the paint
where post defenders step up and challenge all shots.
Offensive Tendencies

Two strong post players give this offense great flexibility. The offensive formation shifts between a 4
out and 3 out/2 in look, allowing freedom of movement for post players. The high/low look is a part of
most possessions. On ball reversal, the high post can slash to the low block to post on the ball side.
The double high set lets the point guard use either post for on ball screen opportunities. Space the
floor well in the half court creating isolation and penetration situations for all players. Small to big
screens are common to free posts in the block area. Good passing and cutting unit.
Transition

Guard push on misses and turnovers. Ball handler does not hesitate to shoot the three off the break.
Once ball is advanced up the sideline it is driven hard to the baseline or lane. Post run ahead to
score or spot up for three point shots.
Set Plays
- Small/Big
cross screen, double down for shooter.
- High
post cross screen and dive, hand off and cross screen for post on
baseline.
- Triple
screen for post along baseline.
Out of Bounds

Main set is double stack on ball side mid post area. Once ball is thrown in and reversed to point, on
ball screen is set to free point guard. When screener dives to block, opposite post fills high post for
shot or high/low pass.
Team Defense

Very solid approach to the defensive end of the floor. Good positioning and a team concept make
them a good half court team. They will pressure the wing pass and apply good pressure on the ball.
Pressure on the ball can lead to penetration and help and recover situations. Posts are active on ball
penetration and contest every move to the basket and come up with block shots in the process.
