CROATIA
MEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008
Team Characteristics
Solid team that relies on distributing the ball evenly. Post players are a focal point of the offense.
They will take a lot of the shot clock to ensure a good shot. Play well as a unit on the offensive and
defensive ends. They play to the strength of each player, especially in half court offense.
Opportunistic in transition but will not force it without a numbers advantage.
Offensive Tendencies

Half court offense relies on a variety of elements; on ball screen and roll, hand offs, big/little screens,
flare screening, and dribble penetration by perimeter players. Posts are capable of shooting the three
point shot especially after screening for guards. The hand off creates instant on ball or off ball
screening situations which free perimeter shooters. Posts screen off the low blocks and step in to
receive the ball. Posts like to back in before going to their scoring move.
Transition

This team will take advantage of the break when numbers are present. Guards push the ball to get to
the basket or penetrate and pitch for open threes. Posts will either trail the play for shot opportunities
of fill the block for post feeds. Guards will run out early when the ball is loose on the floor for lay ups
on the other end.
Set Plays
- Box
set. Hand off, on ball screen and roll.

- Entry
pass followed by shuffle cut and double down for perimeter shooter.

- Begins
with hand off and double/single screen for perimeter player.

Out of Bounds

Once in bounds the focus is to get the ball inside to post players. Most plays start with three front line
players across the lane followed by screening action across the lane. Another option is to give in
bounds passer the option of using a single or double screen once they step in.
Team Defense

Use the element of surprise on the defensive end. Full court and half court defenses make up their
defensive system. In the half court they play man to man with some trapping, especially on hand offs
and on ball screening situations. Use weak side help to rotate to defend post players rolling to the
basket after on ball screens. They play a 2-3 zone in the half court also. In the full court they will
deny the inbounds pass and trap when it is available. Mix up man to man and zone trapping pressure
in the full court.
