MEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008
Team Characteristics
Balanced team with good team identify. Equal scoring comes from the perimeter and post areas.
High and low post players are the target of most possessions. Posts are good passers out of the
post, giving guards freedom to space up and receive passes. Mix up their defenses to keep the
offense off balance which eats up shot clock time. Aggressiveness defensive effort leads to easy
baskets in transition.
Offensive Tendencies

Most of the offense runs through high scoring post players. Half court offense and sets are focused
on feeding the post. After feeding the post, perimeter players space the floor for return passes out of
the post. Isolation is a part of their attack, using posts alone on one side of the floor to score in the
block area or mid post. Half of the offense is generated from on ball screening action usually from
the double high post initial set.
Transition

Quick, aggressive guards push the ball and create scoring on the break. Very good in transition after
turnovers or long rebounds. Point guard will throw ahead, use quick on ball screen on the top of the
floor, or throw directly into the post. A pass ahead to the wing is followed by an on ball screen and
roll or step back by the post.
Set Plays
- Hand
off, reversal, back cut for lob pass.

- Down
screen, baseline runner, post up.

- Back
screen, cross screen, slip to high post.

Starting in a ball side double stack the ball is reversed and thrown into the weak side post player.
Side out of bounds plays flow into set plays after ball reversal. The shuffle cut/back screen
combination is common after ball reversal. The three across set attempts to free a shooter in the ball
side corner.
Team Defense

A combination of defenses keeps the offense off balance. Full court pressure comes in form of man
to man and zone. Their defense begins after made field goal or free throw and they will pick up man
to man after missed shots also. Trapping areas are just before and over the mid court line. In the half
ourt they will trap on ball screens and any hand offs.
