JEDDAH (5th Gulf Basketball U15 Championship) - Bahrain became four-time GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) Basketball U15 Champions and qualified for next year’s FIBA Asia U16 Championship following their 80-54 win over Qatar on the last day of the tournament in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Thursday.
Bahrain asserted themselves right from the start and led 40-20 at half-time. Hassan Ali Hussein’s boys maintained their dominance after the interval to wrap up the win.
Mustafa Hussain and Muzammil Amil both combined for 39 points for Bahrain.
Bahrain, who lost the final of the 4th edition to Kuwait in 2014, beat hosts Saudi Arabia, Oman and United Arab Emirates before beating Qatar on the final day.
Joining Bahrain at the FIBA Asia U16 Championship next year will be Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The hosts were defeated by Bahrain on the opening day, but three consecutive victories propelled them to second.
The GCC Basketball U15 Championship serves as a qualifier for the biennial FIBA Asia U16 Championship. The top two teams represent the sub zone (Gulf) at the FIBA Asia U16 Championship.
