LOS ANGELES (NBA) - In the long history of the NBA, which dates back to 3 August, 1949, a player has never had his father as a head coach.

That's about to change following the New Orleans Pelicans' trade of Austin Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers.

The LA team is coached by Doc Rivers, Austin's dad.

Austin Rivers, who led the United States to the title at the 2010 FIBA Americas U18 Championship before spending a year of playing college basketball for USA senior team coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University, was the 10th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.

The 1.93m shooting guard has played against his father, including a couple of years ago when Doc Rivers was at the helm of the Boston Celtics.

    ...

At 22, his best years would appear to be ahead of him.

He averaged 6.8 points, 2.5 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game in 35 appearances and three starts for the Pelicans this season.

Los Angeles, who have a terrific starting line-up that includes Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, are 26-13 and sixth in the Western Conference.

They are hoping that Rivers will provide a spark off the bench.
