SYDNEY (FIBA World Championship) - After six gruelling weeks of training with NBA teams in the United States, South Australian Boomer, Brad Newley will join the Australian squad as they head into the first camp of their FIBA World Championship campaign in Canberra on Wednesday.

Newley has withdrawn from the 2006 NBA Draft after working out with several NBA teams during his time in the States, including the Phoenix Suns and the Utah Jazz before he attended the Orlando Pre-draft Camp last weekend.

According to Newley’s agent, Leon Rose, there was a lot of interest in the guard from NBA teams, but no guarantees that he would be drafted for 2007.

With his NBA career on hold for now, Newley will again suit up for the Townsville Crocodiles in 2006/07, which is good news for the team and for fans of one of the most exciting players in the Philips Championship competition.

“This is great news for the Townsville franchise and sports fans in the twin cities. Brad is the hottest property in the NBL, and to have him rejoin the team only serves to strengthen the existing roster,” said Crocodiles CEO Ian Smythe.

Rose said that the time spent in the States was good experience and had afforded him the opportunity to personally train with NBA teams and experience first hand the style of play and level of competition in the world’s premier basketball competition.

With the international representative year getting into full swing, Newley will head to Canberra on Thursday night, where he will join 21 other Boomers hopefuls as they try-out for the next training camp and eventual selection to the final team of 12 for the FIBA World Championships.

Despite this boost of one, Brian Goorjian’s squad has been shrinking by the day as the camp approaches.

2005 squad member, Oscar Forman, injured his left knee on the weekend and after a diagnosis of Patella Tendonitis on Monday has withdrawn from the camp. Forman will now undergo a MRI scan to determine the full extent of the injury.

Perth-based guard, Peter Crawford was given until the last possible moment to prove his fitness for the camp, but has not yet fully recovered from an arthroscopy he had early in the NBL off season. He is bitterly disappointed to miss the chance to prove himself after missing the Commonwealth Games team earlier this year.

Sydney Kings centre, Ian Crosswhite, is also on the injured list after he tore his calf muscle during a Kings training session and failed to recover in time for the camp, and Daniel Dillon was another pre-camp casualty, the 20-year-old not yet fully recovered from a foot injury. On doctor’s advice, Dillon withdrew from the camp on Monday.

“We knew these guys were carrying injuries and we gave them up to the last possible minute to prove their fitness,” Boomers coach, Brian Goorjian said.

“Damian Ryan (foot) and Mark Worthington (wrist) will both be carrying injuries into the camp, but they will attend and train to their full ability. Our medical staff will be giving them the best possible treatment throughout the camp.”

Crawford, Crosswhite, Dillon and Forman join Neil Mottram, Glen Saville, James Harvey and Stephen Black on the injured list.

22 athletes will attend the Canberra camp, which gets underway at lunchtime on Wednesday at the Frank Stewart Training Halls at the Australian Institute of Sport.

The Boomers will be playing in front of a home crowd when they play the Resi Mortgage Test Series in Hobart on July 17 and Melbourne on July 19.
