OSTRAVA (2010 FIBA World Championship for Women) – Australia have finalized their star-studded roster for the FIBA World Championship for Women and have the leading players that won the title four years ago in Brazil.
Coach Carrie Graf has Lauren Jackson, Penny Taylor, Kristi Harrower and Belinda Snell to lead the charge while rising stars Liz Cambage and Jenna O’Hea are among the newcomers.
Eighteen-year-old Cambage is a giant 2.03m center while O’Hea, 23, is a shooting guard/small forward.
The two play for the Bulleen Boomers in the WNBL.
Another standout in the WNBL last season was 21-year-old Mariana Tolo, who played for Graf’s Canberra Capitals team.
Tolo, a 1.96m center, was instrumental in the Capitals’ title triumph over Bulleen and will provide a strong, physical presence underneath the basket.
Samantha Richards, a 27-year-old guard, is a newcomer.
She and a returning Opal, Erin Phillips, play professionally in Poland with Gorzow and Wisla Can-Pack Krakow, respectively.
Jackson, who was recently named MVP of the WNBA for the third time in her illustrious career, and Abby Bishop missed the Opals’ preparations while playing for the Seattle Storm in the WNBA but are now with the team.
Seattle completed a 3-0 sweep of the Atlanta Dream in last week’s Finals.
Australia are in Group A of the FIBA World Championship for Women and will take on China, Canada and Belarus in Ostrava.
First up for the defending champions will be a game against Canada on Thursday. You can see that game and every game live on FIBATV.com.
Australia squad: Abby Bishop, Liz Cambage, Hollie Grima, Kristi Harrower, Lauren Jackson, Jenna O’Hea, Erin Phillips, Samantha Richards, Tully Bevilaqua, Belinda Snell, Penny Taylor and Marianna Tolo.
