Egypt are chasing their second consecutive appearance at the FIBA World Cup.

    CAIRO (Egypt) - The Egyptian Basketball Federation confirmed on Tuesday, 13 January that Augustí Julbe Bosch had been named head coach of the Egyptian national team.

    The Catalan replaces former Egyptian international player Mohamed Mounir Elkerdany, who led his country to sixth place at the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket tournament.

    Egypt finished the Group Phase of the 2025 AfroBasket undefeated in three games, but were defeated by Cameroon in the quarter-finals.

    Bosch is well acquainted with Egyptian basketball, having previously coached two of the country's most prominent clubs, Zamalek and Al Ahly Sporting Club.

    He is the only coach to have won two Basketball Africa League (BAL) titles, having led Zamalek to victory in 2021 before repeating the feat with Al Ahly SC in 2023.

    The 53-year-old becomes the fifth coach to take the helm of the Pharaohs in the last six years.

    Before Mounir Elkerdany's departure, the team was coached by Canadian Roy Rana, who led them to the 2023 World Cup, and German Henrik Rödl, who guided them to a 2–1 record in the first round of the 2025 AfroBasket and a 0–2 record in the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

    Former Olympian Ahmed Marei coached Egypt during the 2021 AfroBasket qualifiers, which began in 2020 before leading the team. to a 11th-place finish. In the 2021 AfroBasket tournament.

    Egypt have been drawn in Group D of the 2027 World Cup African qualifiers alongside the reigning African champions, Angola, as well as Mali and Uganda.
