VILLAVICENCIO (Colombia) – Last Wednesday, Astros de Jalisco (MEX) scored 123 points against Caimanes del Llano (COL) to set a new single-game scoring record in Basketball Champions League Americas history. On Sunday, the Mexican side went even further, rolling to a 131-69 road victory over the same opponent at the Álvaro Mesa Amaya Coliseum in Villavicencio, Colombia, breaking their own record for most points by a team in a BCL Americas game.
The 62-point margin of victory is also the largest in the history of the competition, as are the 50 field goals made. Both records had previously belonged to SESI Franca, which earlier this season defeated UdeC by 58 points (120-62) while converting 49 field goals. With the win, Astros also secured qualification to the Quarterfinals from Group A.
Turning point
The Mexican squad encountered little resistance and, as in their previous two outings, put the game away in the first half by building a 66-33 lead. They kept their foot on the gas after the break, outscoring their opponents 65-36 in the second half.
Player of the game
Michael Carrera led the Jalisco side offensively with 18 points (three three-pointers), all scored in the opening 20 minutes. Christopher Perry followed with 17, while Trey Burke added 15.
Tyran De Lattibeaudiere (14 points, 8 rebounds), Daishon Smith (14), Karim Rodríguez and Israel Gutiérrez (10) also reached double figures in a balanced attack in which all 12 players scored at least five points. For Caimanes, Alejo Britos finished with 19 points and Yildon Mendoza added 10.
Stats don’t lie
Coached by Spaniard Iván Déniz, Astros shot an impressive 61 percent from the field (50-of-82), including a scorching 19-of-38 from beyond the arc. They also handed out 31 assists. The hosts committed 21 turnovers, which resulted in 38 points off turnovers for Astros.
Bottom line
Astros (3-0) remain on top of Group A and, with their place in the next round already secured, will look to extend their unbeaten run on Monday against Paisas Basketball Club (1-1). Caimanes (0-3), meanwhile, will return to the court on Wednesday against Paisas in search of a win to keep their hopes alive.
