BEIRUT (FIBA Asia Cup 2017) - Three-point shooting has been a key ingredient of teams' success at the FIBA Asia Cup 2017, and here are the five best shooters we have seen so far.
Mahmoud Abdeen (Jordan)
- 2.8 triples per game, 51.9 3pt%
- Four years ago, it was Wesam Al-Sous who was Jordan's designated outside threat with Abdeen coming off the bench to spell him. This time around, however, the 29-year-old point guard has blossomed into Jordan's top offensive weapon. He has steadily increased his three-point production as the tournament has worn on, with 5 three-pointers against New Zealand highlighting his latest effort.
Matthew Wright (Philippines)
- 3.0 triples per game, 50.0 3pt%
- The Philippines are known for their speed and shooting. Speed is embodied by Jayson Castro, while shooting - at least in its purest form - is embodied by Matthew Wright. The Filipino-Canadian is playing in his first ever FIBA Asia Cup, and he has made quite an impression, helping the Philippines space the floor and keep opposing defenses honest. His best effort was draining 7 three-pointers in Gilas Pilipinas's big win over Qatar on Day 6.
Mohammad Jamshidi (Iran)
- 3.5 triples per game, 66.7 3pt%
- Jamshidi is known mostly for his daredevil drives and ability to finish on the break, but in this competition he has displayed a more potent perimeter game. He has hit at least two three-pointers in every game for the undefeated Iranians, who marched into the Semi-Finals after a big win over hosts Lebanon in the Quarter-Finals. In that triumph, Jamshidi caught fire, hitting an jaw-dropping 6 triples on his way to 24 points.
Terrence Romeo (Philippines)
- 3.5 triples per game, 46.7 3pt%
- Nobody in the tournament has been as scintillating as Terrence Romeo, and one reason for that has been his uncanny sniping from beyond the arc. Romeo bombed against Qatar, missing all five three-point tries, but he bounced back in an eye-popping way against Korea in the Quarter-Finals, dropping 7 triples in the second quarter. If that's not top-notch basketball, then I don't know what is.
Behnam Yakhchali (Iran)
- 4.0 triples per game, 57.1 3pt%
- Team Melli are not missing Samad Nikkhah Bahrami and Hamed Afagh mainly because of how this young stud has come into his own. The 22-year-old Yakhchali is the youngest guy on this list, and despite that, he is arguably also the best shooter of the lot. At 1.95m, he has good size for his position as well, and that helps him shoot over smaller guards who are attempting to close out. He sometimes struggles with his 2-point shooting, but nobody can touch him when it comes to drilling shots from rainbow country.
