    Armenia - Armenian women 3-0 in FIBA Division C basketball tourney

    Armenia closed out the first round of competition with a perfect 3 wins against no loses in the FIBA Women’s Division C basketball championships ongoing in Yerevan, with a 71-47 win over Andorra Wednesday. As in its wins over Gibraltar and Moldova, the home team was led in scoring by its recruits from America: Amanda Jackson with 17 points and (Yerevan-born) Christine Kepenekian with 15.

    Armenia closed out the first round of competition with a perfect 3 wins against no loses in the FIBA Women’s Division C basketball championships ongoing in Yerevan, with a 71-47 win over Andorra Wednesday.

    As in its wins over Gibraltar and Moldova, the home team was led in scoring by its recruits from America: Amanda Jackson with 17 points and (Yerevan-born) Christine Kepenekian with 15.

    The win closes out group play, with Armenia on top in Group A (6 points) and scheduled to play Scotland (1 win and 1 loss in the tournament) Friday in semifinal action, 7 p.m. at Mika Gymnasium. Scotland reached the semifinal with an 86-41 win over Wales on Tuesday.

    At this stage, Armenia lead the seven-team tournament field in points scored per game (80), and field goal percentage (44.2) and is second behind Malta in free-throw percentage (71 and 68.6 respectively). Jackson and Kepenekian also are atop the tournament leader board in points per game, averaging 21.3 and 19 respectively.

    In other tournament action Wednesday, Malta (2-0) beat Wales (0-2) 81-43 and Moldova (2-1) beat Gibraltar (0-3) 77-47. Malta will face Moldova in Friday’s other semifinal.
