Argentina's Maggi, Puerto Rican Brown named BWB Americas MVPs
Malena Maggi of Argentina and Isaiah Brown of Puerto Rico finished off the 2023 Basketball Without Borders Americas camp with the highest honor as they left Montreal with the Most Valuable Player awards.
MONTREAL (Canada) - Malena Maggi of Argentina and Isaiah Brown of Puerto Rico finished off the 2023 Basketball Without Borders Americas camp with the highest honor as they left Montreal with the Most Valuable Player awards.
Maggi and Brown were two of 61 girls and boys from across Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean who participated in the 12th edition of the continental camp June 22 to 25 at Cegep Edouard-Montpetit in Longueuil near Montreal, Quebec.

The campers learned lessons on and off the court from current and former NBA, WNBA and FIBA players, legends and coaches, including Chris Boucher (Toronto Raptors; St. Lucia), Luguentz Dort (Oklahoma City Thunder; Canada; BWB Global 2017) and Bennedict Mathurin (Indiana Pacers; Canada; BWB Global 2020). NBA assistant coaches Rodney Billups (Portland Trail Blazers), Joe Boylan (Minnesota Timberwolves), Quinton Crawford (Dallas Mavericks), Bruce Fraser (Golden State Warriors), Jay Hernandez (Brooklyn Nets) and Eric Khoury (Raptors 905) also served as BWB Americas coaches, The campers also took part in life skills, leadership development and NBA Cares programming.
Maggi helped the Minnesota team win the girls competition by beating Chicago 18-10 in the championship game. Her teammates were Puerto Rican Camila De Pool, who scored 8 points in the final; Deborah Damoah, Anastasija Veljovic and Abigael Levasseur of Canada, Mexicans Mariana Mendivil and Valeria Mora and Alma Bourgarel and Stephanie Smidt from Argentina.
Nyadieng Yiech of Canada led the girls event in scoring with 4.9 points while compatriot Taylor Williams averaged 4.6 points and Veljovic had the biggest scoring output with 13 points in one game.

Brown was a member of the Brooklyn team that won the boys competition, beating the Phoenix team in the championship game 27-19. Brown’s teammates included Canadians Isaiah Castillo and Char Yeiy; Viktor Bender of Argentina, Fernando De Los Santos of Dominican Republic, Colombia’s Samuel Mosquera, Chris Roberts of Trinidad & Tobago and Venezuelan Diego Sulbaran.
Brown finished the camp as the leading scorer with 8.5 points per game including 7 points in the championship game while his Puerto Rico compatriot Brandon Lee averaged 7.7 points with 9 points in the final as well as a camp best 18 points in one game.
The other girls award winners were Johanna Flores of Mexico for the Patrick Baumann Sportsmanship Award; Alma Bourgarel of Mexico as Defensive MVP; and Antonella Luraghi of Paraguay as 3-Point champion.

The boys winner of the Patrick Baumann Sportsmanship Award was Chris Roberts of Trinidad & Tobago while Brazilian Gabriel Ferreira was the Defensive MVP and Brandon Lee of Puerto Rico was 3-point champion.
