MADRID (ACB) - New Real Madrid coach Ettore Messina has added two prominent players in Spanish basketball to his squad.
The capital city club has raided Basque giants Caja Laboral (formerly Tau Ceramica) and signed veteran backcourt duo Pablo Prigioni and Sergi Vidal.
Key members of the Tau side that won the ACB title two years ago and last year prevailed in the Copa del Rey, Prigioni and Vidal have each signed two-year deals with an option for a third.
Madrid sent the high-scoring Brad Oleson, whom they signed earlier this summer on a five-year deal following his successful campaign at Fuenlabrada, to Caja Laboral.
Madrid have been extremely busy in the transfer market, signing earlier this summer Serbia’s rising star Novica Velickovic, former Tau Ceramica shooting guard Travis Hansen and Spain veteran Jorge Garbajosa.
Prigioni is the starting point guard of Argentina while Velickovic and Garbajosa and important figures in their respective national teams. All three are in action this summer with Prigioni and Argentina playing in the FIBA Americas Championship in San Juan, Puerto Rico, aiming for a top-four finish in order to qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.
Velickovic and Garbajosa will square off against each other in Group C at the EuroBasket, where a top six finish is needed to reach Turkey next year (top seven if the Turks finish in the top six).
