BUENOS AIRES (FIBA World Championship) - Tau Ceramica point guard Pablo Prigioni has been rewarded for his terrific season in Spain by being named in Argentina's provisional squad for this summer's FIBA World Championship in Japan.
National team coach Sergio Hernandez has selected 12 players - including eight from their gold-medal winning Olympic team in Athens - with three more players from the team taking part in the forthcoming South American Championship still to be added. Prigioni, a 1.86m star who was voted as the most valuable player of the Copa del Rey for Tau after dishing out 15 assists in the 85-80 final win over Pamesa Valencia - a record for the event.
He helped Tau reach the Euroleague Final Four and also inspired them on their run to the semi-finals of the ACB where they now face Winterthur Barcelona in a best-of-five showdown that tips off on Wednesday. The eight players included in the provisional squad who won gold medals in Greece are international superstar Luis Scola, also of Tau, San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili and Chicago Bulls small forward Andres Nocioni.
Walter Herrmann and Pepe Sanchez of Unicaja Malaga, Carlos Delfino of the Detroit Pistons, Ruben Wolkowisky of BC Khimki and Fabricio Oberto of San Antonio are the other Olympic champions headed to the Far East. Hernandez, who used to coach in Argentina's Liga Nacional, has also selected Leonardo Gutierrez of Ben Hur.
Daniel Farabello and Gabriel Fernandez, who play for former Argentina coach Ruben Magnano at Varese in Italy's Lega A, are the other two selected. With a trio of players to come from Argentina's team at the South American Championship, that competition now takes on added importance for the country and the 17 members of that team.
Argentina will play in Group B of the South American tournament, alongside Uruguay, Paraguay and Colombia. Herrmann and Delfino both excelled for Argentina at the South American Championship before the 2004 Olympics and won places in the Athens team, making huge contributions.
Among the 17 are Ginobili's brother, Sebastian, who plays for Libertad; Spain-based Hernan Jasen of Estudiantes and Federico Kammerichs of Akasvayu Girona; and high-scoring shooting guard Paolo Quinteros of Boca Juniors. Argentina finished runners-up at the FIBA World Championship in Indianapolis in 2002.
They will compete in Group A of August's event in Japan, alongside reigning champions Serbia & Montenegro, France, Nigeria, Venezuela and Lebanon.
