BUENOS ARIES (Liga Nacional) - Leo Gutierrez is already in the Argentina basketball history books as a member of the gold-medal winning team at the 2004 Olympics, and the bronze-medal side four years later in Beijing.
Over the weekend, he added to his reputation as one of the best shooters ever in the country in a 120-76 demolition of Boca Juniors.
The Peñarol man hit a Liga Nacional record 15 shots from behind the arc while amassing 48 points.
He had six in 15 first-half minutes.
"This is incredible,” the 32-year-old Gutierrez said.
“When the first half ended, the guys told me that I didn't have much to go and that I should continue shooting.
“But it was down to my teammates that provided me the chances to be open.
"You don't look for records, it just happens.
“I have achieved this record and it's impressive and very beautiful, now I must enjoy it."
The original record was 13 made three-pointers, and it was achieved by sharpshooter Leo Zanassi in the 1996-97 campaign.
He, too, played for Peñarol and that long-range scoring explosion came against Racing Club.
