CUIABÁ (FIBA Americas Championship for Women) – Argentina kept their record undefeated by beating Chile 62-57 in a well fought game on day two of the FIBA Americas Championship for Women played in Cuiabá.
The Argentineans have a 2-0 record and will face Cuba tomorrow to finish the Preliminary round of the tournament and decide the first position in Group B. Chile is 0-2 and ends their participation against Venezuela.
A total of four scorers were in double figures for Argentina led by Erica Carolina Sanchez who had 13 points and 9 rebounds; Florencia Fernandez followed with 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Argentina won the first quarter 16-8 as Paula Reggiardo had 7 points. In the second quarter Chile came back and at halftime the score was tied at 31.
At halftime Chile was led by Ziomara Morrison with 9 points and Daniela Troncoso had 6. They dominated the rebounds 26-16 and converted some baskets in transition as the Argentineans missed nine three pointers in ten attempts.
In the third quarter Argentina started with a 7-0 run to take a 38-31 lead with six minutes left. Later in the quarter Chile reacted with a 9-0 run to be up 43-41 after a basket by the center Tatiana Gomez. At the end of the first three quarters the score was 45-44 in favor of Chile.
At the end Argentina was more effective scoring in the paint and also from long distance to secure their second win of the tournament. The game was secured after a basket by Mariana Cava with 1:08 left.
Ziomara Morrison scored 12 points and Tatiana Gomez along with Javiera Novion 11 each for Chile.
