ARG/BRA – Argentina prevail to set up final against Brazil

LOJA (FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women) - Argentina hammered Venezuela to set up a rematch with Brazil in the final of the South American Championship.

Eduardo Pinto’s team, which is warming up for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Madrid (June 9-15), won 108-77 on Wednesday night to finish the preliminary round with four wins and just one defeat – a 73-67 setback against Brazil earlier in the week.

Carolina Sanchez had 21 points, Sthefany Thomas 17 and Veronica Soberon 15 for Argentina against Venezuela.

Brazil cruised to victory in their last game, beating Chile 100-55 with Karla pouring in 23 points and Chuca 20.

Ega also scored 14 and handed out seven assists.

Chuca says Brazil have been able to fine-tune their game before their crunch visit to Madrid where like Argentina, they too will take part in qualifying tournament for the Beijing Games.

“At the beginning of the competition, our attack was not flowing as we would have liked,” she said.

“In the last game of the classification stage, we’ve already shown great improvement on offense.

“The team is a growing. Our defense is very good and is keeping our game together.”

Chuca looked ahead to Thursday’s final against Argentina.

“Against Argentina, we have to be focused, keep the defensive system and have good movement on offense if the title is to remain in our hands,” she said.

Meanwhile, the teams that will take part in next year’s FIBA Americas Championship are now known.

Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Chile have snatched the four spots that were up for grabs in the tournament.
