BUENOS AIRES (CABB) - Argentina handed the reins to their national team to Julio Lamas for the second time on Thursday.

The executive council of the Argentinian Basketball Confederation approved the appointment of the 46-year-old on a four-year contract.

The coach of Obras Sanitarias, Lamas has big shoes to fill as he takes over from Sergio Hernandez, who had guided the side from the 2005 FIBA Americas Championship through this year's FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

Hernandez had wanted to remain in charge but only through the London 2012 Olympics.

The confederation desired a longer-term commitment and decided to look for a different coach.

Lamas has had talks with confederation president German Vaccaro in recent weeks.

He is well known in Argentina, having coached the team when it played at the 1998 FIBA World Championship in Athens.

Lamas will be unveiled on Tuesday to the Argentinian media.
