Ankara’s Flagship Sports Complex on the Way
Construction under way for the groundbreaking sports complex in Ankara; the capital city will be hosting the 2010 FIBA World Basketball Championship.
Türkerler İnşaat had been awarded the tender for this facility, Ankara Arena, on May 27, 2009 and entered into a contract with the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality on June 12, 2009. The construction site was delivered to the contractor on June 17th. Türkerler İnşaat is expected to complete the development by April 17, 2009.
With ongoing construction on site, project planning has been completed and the contractor has already commenced erecting the poles. It is expected that the roof would be laid to cover the facility before early winter.
Once completed, the Sports Complex, which is being built next to the parachute tower across the Ankara Railway Station will be Turkey’s modernest indoor facility. Ankara Arena, scheduled to be equipped in accordance with the most recent technologic equipment, is expected to be one of the largest indoor facilities in Turkey with a capacity of 10,400 spectators. The indoor facility in Ankara will not only host basketball games, but also a variety of other sports organizations. The complex will include, among others, 10 suites each hosting 10 persons, press conference rooms, VIP halls and will be furnished with state of the art audio and visual systems. A parking lot of 1,020 cars, covering an area of 22,000 square meters, will be built in the facility increasing its total area to 30,000 square meters.
Ankara Arena, scheduled to accommodate the qualifying group games in Ankara, will have the necessary infrastructure to provide the press with a comfortable working environment. Press stand serving up to 750 journalists, statistics services, closed circuit TV broadcast and wireless broadband internet connection are among services that will be offered to the journalists. Furthermore, the complex will have an office that can house 500 journalists, a meeting-conference hall hosting 300 journalists and a number of cafés and restaurants providing various catering services for both journalists and basketball fans. Following the completion, tickets for suites and season’s games will be offered.
The facility will also be equipped with giant LED screens and instant lighting systems offering the best possible conditions to allow athletes to work out in a comfortable environment. Additionally, the facility will have six locker rooms in compliance with the recent standards, a modern fitness facility and an anti-doping control center.
Ankara Arena will also host other sports organizations such as figure skating contests and high-profile tennis tournaments. As the complex will allow indoor access to trucks and long vehicles, stages and other structures requiring complex technical infrastructures will be easily set up, paving the way for the potential shows of the world’s most popular stars.
