YAOUNDE (AfroBasket Women 2015) - Africa champions Angola outplayed Algeria on Saturday to remain the only undefeated team in Group B of AfroBasket Women 2015.
After a slow start to the game, Jaime Covilha's side stepped up to finish with a comprehensive 71-53 victory. Lina Mahsas led Algeria with 18 points while Angola's team effort made the biggest difference as all players but Isabel Francisco scored at least two points.
Turning Point: Although Nesrine Taibi hit a three-pointer that tied the contest at 20 midway through the second quarter, the Angolans responded with a 20-1 to close the half leading 40-21, and the North Africans never got back in the game.
Stats Don't Lie: Angola made 18 of their first 40 points from beyond, kept Algeria powerless for most of the second quarter. Both Felizarda Jorge and Ana Goncalves inspired the Angolans with two three-pointers each.
Game Hero: Angolan Luisa Tomas bounced back from two modest performances early in the competition to finish with team-highs 13 points and nine rebounds.
Bottom Line: It was business as usual for the Angolans who recorded their third win in as many games in Group B, while Algeria remain winless in three games and see their chances of advancing to the Quarter-Finals evaporating.
Algeria's Nesrine Boussaid said after the game they "will keep fighting and try to beat at least Guinea as Angola is a very good team that we could not compete against."
