Angolan hegemony at the level of national teams started in 2002, when 1º de Agosto won the continental title for the first time. The conquest happened in Luanda (Angola), in a competition that was dominated by the Angolan team.

One year later, for the first time Angola was represented in the continental competition by three teams, namely Petro de Luanda, 1º de Agosto and Interclube.

Surprisingly, the two first ones, considered as favourites, did not make it to the final, but Interclube in their debut participation passed to the last stage, losing in the final to ABC of Cote d'Ivoire.

In 2005, Petro de Luanda conquered the African clubs cup, in a final played against 1º de Agosto, in Nigeria.

In the present edition, the second one in Angola, any of the national representatives are in condition to winning the trophy.
