Luanda (FIBA Africa Championship) - FIBA Africa the continent's apex decision making organ has thrown its weight behind Angola to be the first Africa country to host the FIBA World Championship.
Speaking recently in Luanda, the Angolan capital, Secretary General of African basketball body, Dr. Alphonse Bilé, said that FIBA Africa is prepared to back the Angolan Basketball Federation and its government for a bid by Angola to organise a World Basketball Championship.
“We will do everything to help Angola in the same way as we helped Tunisia organise the FIBA U19 World Championship in 2006”, Dr. Bile stated.
The general secretary of FIBA Africa went on to say that the 24th edition of the FIBA Africa Championship which will jump-start Wednesday through August 25, is to take on a new format and, for the first time, will feature 16 teams concurrently in five Angolan cities of Luanda which will host the opening and closing games of the championship, Benguela which will host matches involving teams in group-A, Lubango will host matches of group-B, Huambo will play host to teams in group-C and Cabinda will host matches of group-D teams.
As well as the great level of organisation, Angola is the centre of this sport on the African continent with seven worthy championships under its belt, having been the pride of Africa in the world championships and the Olympics.
