ALICANTE (FIBA World Championship) - Angola showed their potential by beating China on Monday to claim third place in the Torneo Comunitat Valenciana.

Alberto Carvalho's men, 97-73 losers against hosts Spain on Sunday, hit back to claim a 74-66 triumph over the Far East giants.

Eduardo Mingas had a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds for the Africans, who will be in Group B at the FIBA World Championship in Japan which tips off on August 19.

Veteran guard Miguel Lutonda poured in 14 points while for China, 18-year-old Yi Jianlian had another big game with 15 points and 15 boards.

Wang Shipeng scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Chinese, who are hoping to get a lift in Japan from 7ft 5in center Yao Ming.

Yao is working out again as he tries to recover from a broken foot suffered at the end of his NBA season with the Houston Rockets.

Angola did not win a game at the Athens Olympics in 2004 but they lost Lutonda to injury early in that tournament while China reached the quarter-finals.
