BERLIN (Germany) - Julie Allemand has written her name into history after taking top spot in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup all-time assists chart.

The Belgian Cats' playmaker came into the competition in Berlin with 87 assists and locked in 8th place in the list. But after serving up 17 dimes in her first 2 games against Türkiye and Puerto Rico, she had 104 assists to her name at the start of the game against Australia.

She needed 5 to become the Women's World Cup all-time assist leader and she did that in the first half.

That has seen her jump into top spot over some great players and a previous podium made up of legendary trio Dawn Staley, Sue Bird and Laia Palau.

Playing at her third edition of the World Cup, Allemand got off to a flying start on debut back at Tenerife 2018 where she tied the game-high assists record.

Since landing in Berlin, she has shown her phenomenal creative talent once again and also took time to reflect on her breathtaking achievement.

“

We love to pass the ball and to play for each other. So, I think it means even more.

"I really didn't know, but it makes me feel great," said Allemand when she was asked prior the game against Australia.

"Especially because with Belgium we love to share the ball. We love to pass the ball and to play for each other. So, I think it means even more. "It shows how Belgium is so good when we play as a team. It's kind of nice. I am proud of it and also glad it is assists and not something else. "It's amazing and a great achievement. I don't want to focus on it though. I just always want to be the best I can be on the court to help the team to win.

"If it's scoring it's scoring and if it is making assists, then it is making assists. It's nice - but also like I said, for Belgium."

Meanwhile Allemand also took time to send a message to younger aspiring girls starting out on a basketball journey. In particular, those who might feel deflated if others around them are scoring more points. "Look at me, I can still do it and have a great career," said the guard.

"I can help to put Belgium really high and we can have a great team. It is not only about scoring and I know everyone is thinking about scoring and always dribbling and highlights, but sometimes it's also nice to have the true point guard in your team. "I think it helps the game and I know the game is different and the game is evolving and that is good, but it's nice to have someone who really likes sharing the basketball," concluded Allemand.

Allemand finished the game against Australia with 7 assists to go with 11 points and 4 rebounds.
