Red Devils shoot for 2-0 as reigning champs go for win no. 1

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - Al Arabi SC will look to snare the provisional lead in Group B as Gulf League action of the 2025-26 FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL) competitions continues this week.

The defending Qatari Basketball League champions will try to chalk up their second win in as many games when they test the mettle of newcomers Sharjah SC on Tuesday at the latter's backyard in Dubai.

Game time is at 19:00 local time at the Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Sports Hall, with the Red Devils coming in confident after opening their season with an 83-78 stunner of Kuwait Club last week on the road.

Mosti Rashed starred in that triumph with a game-high 29 points as he helped Elmedin Kikanovic and Sindou Diallo deliver the most crucial of hits down the stretch to repel the former two-time Gulf League titlists.

And surely, the troika will once again be at front and center in their aim to go 2-0, which if they do would be the first time that they will accomplish as much in WASL after failing to do so during the 2024-25 games.

But it's not lost on the wards of Coach Hatem Mamlouk the challenge that awaits them in the 'City of Gold,' for they will be taking on a team that's hungry to break through after getting blown out in their debut.

It could be recalled that Sharjah absorbed a 104-78 beatdown at the hands of Al Ula Club last October 14, in which Wael Arakji and Jonathan Gibson erupted and combined for 73 points - nearly matching their output.

Definitely, Glenn Robinson III and the rest of the reigning UAE League Basketball champions would want to atone for that defeat now that they're playing at home again, and they plan to do so right away against Arabi.

Meanwhile, Shabab Al Ahli will look to realign their title defense on the right track when they lock horns with Muharraq Club on Monday in Dubai as well in a battle of teams aiming to barge into the win column.

Battling it out in 19:00 are sides that got off on the wrong foot to start their bids, with Shabab Al Ahli bowing to Ittihad Club in a rematch of last year's Sub-Zone Final, 94-88, and the Red Wolves losing to Kazma, 95-81.

Week 4 of WASL will mark the beginning of another busy season ahead as the West Asia League will finally get rolling on Wednesday, with Sagesse SC and Shahrdari Gorgan ushering the tilt on Wednesday in Beirut.
