KIGALI (FIBA AfroBasket 2017) – Former Rwanda captain Hamza Ruhezamihigo has been included in the 13-man squad to prepare for the upcoming FIBA AfroBasket 2017 set for September 8-16 in Senegal and Tunisia.

The 32-year old, who was left out from Rwanda’s qualifying campaign in September 2014 in Uganda and March this year in Egypt, is expected to be a big addition to the rather youthful side.

"It is always a great feeling to play basketball at the international level and represent Rwanda especially with a great group of guys. I am grateful for the opportunity once again and feel blessed." - Ruhezamihigo .

The dependable point guard, who has returned in time to celebrate 10 years since he made his FIBA AfroBasket debut in 2007 in the Angolan capital of Luanda, admitted that he is excited to be back.

Ruhezamihigo along with shooting guard Kenneth Gasana, center Kami Kabange, captain Aristide Mugabe and power forward Olivier Shyaka will be the core of the East African side returning to this stage for the first time since 2013.

However, on his return, he finds several new faces on the squad that are ready to make a mark at the big stage but lack the experience required to favorably compete against the very best on the continent.

Ruhezamihigo in an exclusive interview told FIBA.basketball: "This year is going to be the first FIBA AfroBasket for many guys on the team. They are working hard and we as veterans will do our best to lead by example and help them through the process as well."

"It is important to have that balance on a team especially at the high level tournament like this one."

Rwanda are drawn in Group C along with the co-hosts Tunisia, Cameroon and Central African Republic.

Moise Mutokambali's side will be looking to better their performance from their last appearance four years ago when they finished 10th and Ruhezamihigo said that they will do everything in their power to try and achieve this.

"It is always a great feeling to play basketball at the international level and represent Rwanda especially with a great group of guys. I am grateful for the opportunity once again and feel blessed," he said.

Rwanda will open their account against the hosts but the last time the two sides faced off, it was a close game and Tunisia snatched an 83-81 victory from the hands of the Rwandans at the 2013 edition in Cote d'Ivoire.
