COTONOU (2016 FIBA Africa U18 Championship) - Both Cote d’Ivoire and Benin became the latest teams to qualify for the 2016 FIBA Africa U18 Championship, which will be held in Kigali, Rwanda, from 22-31 July.
While Cote d’Ivoire dominated the FIBA Africa Zone 3 qualifier with four wins in as many games, hosts Benin benefited from the goal-differential to secure the remaining spot despite finishing with tying 1-3 with Burkina Faso.
Following the withdrawal of Nigeria, the qualifier held in the Beninese city of Cotonou has brought together Cote d’Ivoire, Benin, and Burkina Faso.
Runners-up at 2012 FIBA Africa U18 Championship, Cote d’Ivoire will be heading to Kigali looking to improve from their Sixth-Place accomplished two years ago in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
In the meantime, Benin will be making their second straight appearance in the Africa’s youth flagship tournament.
Both Cote d’Ivoire and Benin joined nine other national teams - Algeria, Angola, DR Congo, Egypt, Mali, hosts Rwanda, Tunisia,Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
One team is expected to be awarded a wild card to complete the 12-team lineup.
