USIU Flames improve winning streak, KCCA fall again
DAR ES SALAAM (FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women 2016) - The United States International University (USIU) Flames won their second straight game in the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women 2016
DAR ES SALAAM (FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women 2016) - The United States International University (USIU) Flames won their second straight game in the FIBA Africa Zone 5 qualifiers for the African Champions Cup for Women (ACCW) 2016 on Monday in Dar es Salaam, beating Don Bosco Lionesses 69-46.
Led by Sarah Chan, the Kenyan outfit took to the hardwood on a commanding mode outplaying the home side from start to finish.
As much as the Tanzanians tried to secure their first win in three games, they looked powerless to stop Chan who finished with game-highs 21 points and 11 rebounds.
The Kenyans used an 18-6 lead in the first quarter and despite Don Bosco’s attempts to stay in the game in the second quarter, they trailed 35-20 at the break. And to make matters worse for Don Bosco, George Mayienga team's full-court defense proved a game-changer.
Georgia Adhiambo and Angela Awuor added 15 and 11 points respectively as the Kenyans improved their record to 2-0.
Meanwhile, in an encounter between two Ugandan sides, UCU Lady Canons edged out Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) Leopards 60-59 to stay undefeated in two games.
Playing without center Martha Soigi proved costly for KCCA, while Vilma Achieng dominated the game in the painted area.
Although Ritah Imanishimwe missed one of her two free-throws with two seconds remaining, she sealed the victory from the charity stripe.
With their second straight loss, KCCA have their backs against the wall, and will need to win all their four games in order to give themselves a chance of reaching the final of the tournament, and as a result secure one of the two places on offer for Zone 5 teams for this year’s ACCW to be staged in Maputo, Mozambique, from 25November to 4 December.
In Monday’s last action, Ubumwe cruised to their second victory in three games after defeating JKT 74-48.
Last year's Zone 5 MVP Ines Nezerwa came up with yet another strong performance with 12 points while Joselyn Munyaneza added 15 points.
Seven teams are participating in the round-robin ACCW Zone 5 qualifier.
