Beginning last January, an out-of-competition testing programme was established with the intention of ensuring effective dope testing in the lead-up to the 24-team competition taking place from 5-20 September.
The work is a continuation of what began at last year's FIBA Basketball World Cup. This entailed adding players expected to play in EuroBasket to FIBA's Registered Testing Pool (RTP).
"Athlete Biological Passports" were then established for these players, with the collection of blood and urine samples.
Throughout the project, FIBA has worked in conjunction with multiple national anti-doping organisations (NADOs) to align testing programmes to ensure a common and effective approach across the continent, seeing the costs and expertise shared by both parties.
This has included:
- 48 urine samples
- 48 bloods samples for athlete biological passport (ABP) purposes
- 24 human Growth Hormone (hGH) samples [/unordered]
Looking further ahead than just the next two weeks, the players will have undergone effective testing ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Additionally, FIBA has been able to gather and use the medial and sport expertise of the European and World Medical Commission members to ensure the players compete in the best-possible conditions.
