PARNU - A distinguished player and coach earlier in his career, Estonian basketball legend Jaak Salumets is now President of his nation's Basketball Federation.
Further underlining the esteem in which the 67-year-old is held, he was the only candidate for the position and was voted into the role unanimously by all members of the Board at the recent election in Parnu.
"We have a tall and serious way to go with what is in front of us," Salumets declared after his appointment. "I would like to thank all those who gave me a hand [to reach this position]. Now our principal will be that together, we can be stronger."
The former President of the Estonian Basketball Federation, Juri Ratas, is now serving in his new role as the Prime Minister of Estonia. He also attended the election and took the time to endorse his successor.
He stated: "I thank you all for these past four years - for the passion and your contributions. Jaak has many words of wisdom and you can believe in him and trust his team."
One of the first duties of Salumets has been overseeing the latest edition of the Baltic Sea Basketball Cup, a youth basketball event taking place this week involving Estonia and several of their neighbors.
