Hagåtña (Guam) - Guam opened their FIBA Women’s Micronesian Cup campaign with a composed 110 – 44 victory over the Federated States of Micronesia, setting the tone for a squad built on experience, continuity, and a clear sense of purpose. At the heart of it was Mia San Nicolas, whose journey with Guam stretches back to her youth debut in 2014, a 12‑year arc of representing her island, shaping its pathway, and inspiring the next generation now rising beside her.
San Nicolas finished with 20 points and 6 rebounds, leading scorers, alongside Joylyn Pangilinan, and anchoring Guam’s early momentum as they surged to a 29 – 9 advantage in the opening quarter. But her impact went far beyond the box score. The veteran forward has long been one of Guam’s foundational figures, carrying the program through FIBA Youth Oceania Championships, Pacific Games cycles, and the inaugural FIBA Women's Micronesian Cup in 2022.
It was a really good match. Our team played selfless ball. We shared the ball with each other and we were able to do great things together. I’m proud of our team.
That selflessness was visible across the roster. Young guard Lana Caparoso Quinata, stepping into her first senior FIBA Women's Micronesian Cup after a breakout FIBA Women's U17 Oceania campaign, impressed San Nicolas with her poise and energy.
“I want to say our young Lana, she did great things” she said, also highlighting veteran leadership from Joylyn Pangilinan, who knocked down key threes to keep Guam’s rhythm steady, finishing the game with four triples.
For San Nicolas, the meaning of representing Guam has only deepened over time.
Every time I come back to represent Guam, it’s a feeling of pride. To share it with my teammates and to come back home in front of family and friends — it’s a blessing.
That pride now fuels a bigger mission: securing qualification for the Pacific Games Tahiti 2027, where Guam aims to continue building its women’s pathway and elevate the next wave of talent.
“It would mean everything,” San Nicholas said about Pacific Games qualification. “Our goal is to be at the Pacific Games 2027 in Tahiti, keep developing the pathway for our younger girls and building on our team chemistry.”
With Palau awaiting tomorrow, Guam’s focus is on carrying forward the cohesion shown in their opener. “We want to capitalise on the way we played tonight,” San Nicolas added. “Keep the ball moving, stay selfless, and just play hard.”
The top two placed teams in the women's competitions will qualify for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti with the top placed men's team also qualifying. The FIBA Micronesian Cup and FIBA Women's Micronesian Cup tips‑off on August 14, with all games to be played at University of Guam Calvo Field House.
