GERMANY (Berlin) - A young Spain squad claimed bronze at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 as Miguel Mendez masterminded a return to the podium for his country after they missing the 2022 edition altogether.
Spain wowed the crowds in Berlin throughout the entire competition with their ball movement and passion - although they had to overcome an up-and-down opening phase.
They defeated hosts Germany in the opening game by a wide margin, only to follow it up by suffering a shock defeat at the hands of Mali - arguably the biggest upset of the tournament.
However, they bounced back with confidence to convincingly beat Japan, secure the top spot in Group A, and advance directly to the Quarter-Finals.
Coach Mendez and Spain then handled Australia to advance and face USA in the Semi-Finals. They put up a spirited effort before losing by just 10 points.
They then complete their memorable journey in Berlin by facing the hosts once again and claiming an 81-58 win to secure bronze and a fourth medal in five editions.
