BERLIN (Germany) - France will head to the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 with a roster that could be considered by many as one of their most talented of all-time.
Coming off the back of their stunning showing at Paris 2024 when they almost toppled USA and took gold, the mission for France now is to end their astonishing World Cup medal drought.
They look like they have the talent and experience to land on the podium for the first time since the inaugural edition way back in 1953.
The roster is packed with star names, led by Gabby Williams. Sensational at the Olympics two years ago, she will provide the main thrust for France on both ends of the floor.
Meanwhile after missing Sydney 2022 after picking up a devastating injury on the eve of the first game, Marine Johannes will be looking to make up for lost time. A special player always ready for the biggest stage, she will not only fill the highlights reel, but also be prepared to take responsibility in clutch moments.
One of the biggest reasons to be excited for this French team is the presence of rising star Dominique Malonga who famously threw down a dunk at the Qualifying Tournament earlier this year in Lyon-Villeurbanne. Her wing span, height, defensive presence and ever evolving post skills means she could have a seriously big impact.
In the backcourt, Leila Lacan is another young gun set to make her debut in the competition. The guard has had an outstanding past 12 months in EuroLeague Women, with both her energy and dynamic play likely to be hugely important.
A player suiting up for the first time in her first ever senior tournament is Carla Leite. Another player who is a walking highlights reel and bucket, the guard coming into the mix gives France a real boost and much more guard depth.
The frontcourt also has plenty of options with Janelle Salaun having lit it up at TISSOT MVP in the Qualifying Tournament with her scoring skills.
There is also Valeriane Ayayi, who will use her outstanding know-how and leadership to be the all-important glue in the team. Also capable of game-winning contributions, the forward remains a cornerstone of the team and will be hugely influential.
Tipped to make a deep run and as one of the favorites along with reigning champions USA, the first mission for France is to safely navigate the opening phase.
They will tip-off against Hungary in Group B and then face Korea and Nigeria.
