BENGALURU (India) — Indian Railways are the undisputed powerhouse of Indian women's basketball.
Now, the country's most successful women's team will take its place on the continental stage at the FIBA Women's Basketball League Asia 2026.
A legacy of champions
Indian Railways won their first Senior National Championship in 1963. More than six decades later, they have added 40 more titles, including their latest triumph in 2026. That victory marked their eighth consecutive championship and took their overall tally to an extraordinary 41 national titles.
The numbers tell only part of the story.
Across generations, some of India's finest players have worn the Railways jersey.
Geethu Anna Jose, one of the country's most accomplished women's players, was a dominant force for the team during one of its most successful eras. Alongside her, Anitha Pauldurai - the team's current coach - became another key figure in the Railways dynasty, while also making a lasting contribution to the Indian national team.
Their success helped establish Indian Railways as more than a successful domestic team - it became one of the country's most important pathways for elite women's basketball.
Now comes a very different test.
WBL Asia brings together champions and leading clubs from across Asia, giving Indian Railways the opportunity to measure their long-established domestic pedigree against the continent's best.
For a team that has spent generations winning championships in India, this is an opportunity to take that experience beyond the domestic game.
The new challenge
That legacy now rests on a new generation.
Pushpa Senthil Kumar is likely to be at the heart of the Railways challenge. The 178cm center has already established herself as one of India's leading players, averaging 14.2 points and 6.6 rebounds at the FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2025 Division B. She also led India in efficiency at 17.2.
Vaishnavi Yadav offers another important offensive option. She played a key role in Railways' run to the 2026 Senior National title, including 15 points in the team's 95-65 win over Karnataka.
Harshitha Kelttira Bopaiah is another player who can make an impact. She scored 23 points in Railways' 75-66 victory over Kerala in the 2026 Senior National final, helping the champions retain their title.
Together, they represent the next chapter of the Railways story — players shaped by the same system that has produced generations of champions, but now facing a challenge unlike any they have encountered at home.
The stage is set in Bengaluru.
Forty-one national titles have established the legacy. Now comes the chance to take that legacy beyond India.
The champions have the history. They have the home crowd.
Will that be enough?
