ABIDJAN (Cote d’Ivoire) – TThe 2025 edition of the Women's Basketball League Africa (WBLA) is just days away from the start in the ancient city of Cairo, Egypt.
Expectations are high for a thrilling championship, given the calibre of the teams due to arrive in Pharaoh's land.
While we look forward to seeing the best women's club basketball, we take a moment to review the records set between 2022 and 2024.
Maputo 2022
The 26th of the tournament was hosted in Maputo, Mozambique and the first after the COVID-19 pandemic, which stalled the event in 2020 and 2021.
The tournament was known as the FIBA Africa Women’s Basketball Cup and Egypt’s Sporting Alexandria won their first title and two Mozambican teams – Costa do Sol and Ferroviaro – finished second and third respectively.
The season had Heggar Amir of Sporting Alexandria as the MVP
The following records were set in the tournament:
- Ifunaya Okoro, who featured for KPA went on to a tournament record of 35 points in a 69-59 win iover CNSS.
- KPA's Madina Okot grabbed the most rebounds in a game, finishing with 22 boards in a 69-59 win over CNSS.
- Asrar Bakr of Sporting Alexandria recorded the most assists in game, finishing with 9 dimes in 89-68 win over APR.
- Four players — Dulce Mabjaia (Maputo), Fatoumata Diango (ASCVD), Marlene Ngobeleza (CNSS) and Marie Laurence Imanizanayo (APR) — each scored five three-pointers across different games.
Alexandria 2023
Until 2023, the tournament was known as FIBA Africa Women’s Basketball League before it was rebranded to the current name: Women's Basketball League Africa (WBLA).
2023 also marked the second title win for Sporting Alexndria as they hosted the tournament, becoming the first Egyptian Club to do so and the first to also win the rebranded tournament back-to-back.
Cierra Dillard of Sporting Alexandria voted MVP.
The following records were set in the tournament.
- Rwandan international player Destiney Philoxy set a record for the most points scored in a game, fishing with 41 points in a 101-97 loss to KPA. That scoring record still stands to this day.
- Natalie Mwangale of KPA set a record for the most assists in the game, finishing with 13 dimes in a 101-97 win over REG.
- Natalie Mwangale of KPA set a record for the most three-points made (8) in a game during a 101-97 win over REG. That record still stands to this day.
Dakar 2024
The 2024 took place in Dakar, Senegal.
Ferroviário de Maputo won their third title in the tournament's history after defeating Al Ahly of Egypt 81-72 in the final.
A total of 12 teams from 8 countries attended the tournament.
Ndioma Kane of Al Ahly was voted the MVP.
The following records were set in the tournament:
- Anabela Cossa of Ferroviario de Maputo tied the record for the most three-points made (8) in an 86-72 win over APR.
- Ndioma Kane of Al Ahly Sporting Club set a record for the most blocked shots in the history of the WBLA, finishing with 9 swats during a 81-72 loss to Maputo.
