ABIDJAN (Cote d’Ivoire) - On Sunday, Nigeria returned to their winning ways with a 70-40 victory over Senegal, bouncing back from a narrow 75-74 loss to Cameroon two days earlier.
This win brings Nigeria's record in the competition to two wins and one loss, securing their spot in the next round.
The team dominated the first half, 45-18 (21-4, 24-14), building a commanding lead.
In the third quarter, Senegal coach Pape Malick Diop adjusted, tightening up defensively to cut off Nigeria's transition game. The tactical shift paid off, with Senegal winning the quarter 12–13.
Nigeria regained control in the fourth quarter after Akindele turned to his bench. The introduction of Precious Aladelua, Edore Pela, Favour Anari, Nimah Ibidunni, and Bisola Arowolo shifted the momentum back in Nigeria's favor.
The Junior D'Tigress closed out the quarter 13-9 to secure the victory.
Despite Senegal's tightened defense, Nigeria continued to attack, forcing 34 turnovers and out-rebounding Senegal 53-45. Oluwatobiloba Owolabi led with 13 points, two rebounds, and one assist.
Ainab Adelaja praised her teammates' resilience: "Today's game was tough, and I appreciate my teammates for helping us win." Looking ahead to the knockout stage, Adelaja added, "We're improving, and we're winning games. Don't worry."
She pushed back on the idea that an earlier loss to Senegal made this matchup easier, saying that every game is pressurizing for the team. "Every game is tough. No game is simple or easy for us."
Senegal's Fatoumata Sall, who finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, reflected on the loss: "It's sad that we failed in our mission here, but we want to tell our people back home that we tried our best."
