ISTANBUL (Türkiye) - Jayden Cecil put together a monster debut for New Zealand as he poured in 42 points in his first international appearance - albeit in a heartbreaking 112-100 double-overtime loss to Türkiye.
Cecil converted 17 of 40 shots including 6 of 19 three-pointers and hit 2 of 4 free throws while chipping in 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. That effort was not enough as New Zealand failed to hold a 25-point lead in the third quarter and lost to the hosts in two overtimes.
Cecil's 42 points tied him for third place all time in U17 World Cup history with Felipe Quinones of Puerto Rico from two years ago against France in the Round of 16. The all-time record is 50 points by Dzanan Musa of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016 and Abdouramane Toure of Guinea in 2024 against China.
