ORADEA (Romania) - Latvia celebrated becoming FIBA U16 EuroBasket champions for the first time, after defeating four-time winners France in Sunday's Final.
In a repeat of the 2014 Final won by France, this time it was Latvia prevailing with a decisive 75-69 victory behind another big display from Benjamin Berrouet with 22 points and 13 rebounds.
After a tightly contested first half, Latvia made their move with a 24-11 third quarter, and their victory sparked jubilant scenes at the buzzer.
Berrouet took the tournament's Most Valuable Player honors after finishing with averages of 23.6 points, 15.0 rebounds and 3.6 blocks for a dominant efficiency rating of 36.2.
The center was joined in the All-Star Five by title-winning teammate Markuss Jahovics, as well as Messie-Guethan Iwani of France, plus Lithuania guard Danielius Jasikevicius and Spain's Rhys Robinson.
The final spot on the podium was claimed by Spain as they survived a huge Lithuania comeback to prevail 96-93 in the Third Place Game, earlier in the day.
Israel's Maor Sela recorded the seventh triple-double in the competition's history with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a victory against Belgium in the decisive Classification game for 13th place.
That meant Belgium were relegated alongside Slovenia and Georgia, while Croatia, Iceland and Estonia will replace them in the top-flight next summer after they secured promotion from the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2026, Division B tournament.
